Greetings, rockers! We're diving back into the world of classic heavy metal (I can just see the joy on Evelyn's face), because east London's favourite sons are back with their unprecedented FIFTH album to chart on our list! Creeping in at #n9 is the imperious self-titled debut album, Iron Maiden.
Raw and bursting with the burgeoning heavy metal sound, Iron Maiden is a collection of songs that represent the band's iron will and perseverance, refusing to cave amidst the rise of punk in England. While songs like "Charlotte the Harlot," "Sanctuary" and "Running Free" are culled from the bouncing rhythms of punk, Iron Maiden's true sound is reflected on the wah-lead heavy "Prowler," the melodic instrumental "Transylvania" and, of course, their very first epic, "Phantom of the Opera." The latter can be seen as a quintessential Maiden track, establishing the blueprint for one of metal's most enduring acts.
Iron Maiden received an impressive debut score of 76/100 from Best Ever Albums, and was ranked No.21 on their list of 'best albums released in 1980'. This album is still regarded by many hardcore Maiden fans as one of the band's strongest pieces of work.
I am more than aware how popular this album is, but I suspect there will still be a few of you who will be surprised how high this album charted on our list. So, give us your thoughts about this metal classic, and let us know where you'd rank it among Maiden's other '80s albums. Is it really better than Somewhere in Time, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Piece of Mind, and Killers?
Right, that's me done for today, metalheads, but I'll be back later in the week after Viking and Tornado have entertained you all with some more rock and metal classics!
Have fun, and keep rockin' !
